PNWSGNA Continuing Education Scholarship Fund

Purpose: To assist PNWSGNA nurses and associates with registration fees associated with gastroenterology-focused continuing educational programs. PNWSGNA supports career development by supporting gastroenterology (GI) nurse and associate members who wish to attend GI continuing education programs. These scholarship funds will be awarded as an incentive for professional growth and development, and can be used to meet the expenses associated with gastroenterology-focused meetings, workshops, courses, conferences or other activities that promote professional growth. This scholarshipcan notbe used to attend the SGNA Annual Course.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Applicant must:
    • Be a current PNWSGNA member (nurse or associate)
    • Be currently employed in the field of gastroenterology
    • Actively support the PNWSGNA mission (see
  2. PNWSGNA members are eligible for one continuing education scholarship every fiscal year [January 1-December 31], up to a maximum number of 3 scholarships within a 5 year period. Each scholarship application should be for a single event or class.
    • Please Note: Past Continuing Education Scholarship (CES) recipients who did not fulfill the agreed-upon terms of scholarships received in the past are ineligible to receive future Continuing Education Scholarships.
    • Also, incomplete applications will be automatically disqualified.
  3. Preference will be given to those applicants who are unable to obtain financial funding or assistance from employers due to employer financial hardship and who are also personally experiencing financial hardship.

Terms of Agreement:

  1. Within 30 days following the conference, the scholarship recipient agrees to:
    • Submit a short article (2 to 3 paragraphs) to the PNWSGNA Newsletter Editor describing the event they attended (review of the event and/or highlights of what was learned and what will be useful on the job).
    • Submit a copy of their Certificate of Attendance to the PNWSGNA Scholarship Chair.
  2. With 14 days of receipt of submitted items, the PNWSGNA Treasurer will draft a check in the amonut of $100 to the recipient. 

Selection Process:  Applications will be reviewed and acted upon by the PNWSGNA Board. Applicants will be notified of the Board’s decision in writing, within 14 days of receipt of application. Approved scholarship applications will include the amount awarded. Applications denied will include reason(s) why. In addition:

  • Scholarship policies, guidelines, and budget will be set by the PNWSGNA Board.
  • Scholarship funds will be determined in the following manner:
    • Each January 1st, the PNWSGNA Treasurer will transfer 10% of the current PNWSGNA checking account balance into a special “Scholarship” fund account. To ensure that scholarship funds are available throughout the year, the funds will be divided (and distributed) according to each quarter of the year. Example:
      • First Quarter = January-March = ¼ Scholarship fund balance
      • Second Quarter = April-June = ¼ Scholarship fund balance
      • Third Quarter = July-September = ¼ Scholarship fund balance
      • Fourth Quarter = October-December = ¼ Scholarship fund balance
    • Funds left over from prior quarters will be “rolled into” the remaining quarters for the year. Funds left in the account on December 31st will be “rolled into” the upcoming year’s account balance.
  • The number of scholarships awarded each quarter will be dependent upon the funds available each quarter.
  • Each scholarship recipient may be awarded their registration fee in full or in part, up to a maximum total award of $100/applicant/year. Total amount of scholarship funding to be awarded will be determined by the PNWSGNA Board on a case-by-case basis.
